How to Make French Toast

Making restaurant-quality French toast in the comfort of your own kitchen is easier than you think—all you need is a skillet, a few key ingredients, and a good recipe. That’s where we come in!

French Toast Ingredients

Every home cook has their own twist on basic French toast, but most variations have the following ingredients:

  • White Bread: Thick sliced bread is the base of all French toast. Firm, dense, slightly stale slices absorb a custard-like egg mixture better than thin, airy slices.
  • Eggs: Eggs are a must when it comes to French toast. The proteins coagulate after heating, which binds the batter together and ensures a rich texture. Meanwhile, the fat adds extra creaminess.
  • Milk: You can technically use any liquid to make French toast, although milk is the most popular. Milk not only adds the needed moisture, but the fat gives extra richness to the batter. This recipe calls for whole milk as it creates the ideal texture. You can easily substitute half-and-half, cream, or your favorite alternative milk—full-fat varieties will produce a creamier consistency.
  • Vanilla and Cinnamon: The best French toast is warm, comforting, savory, and sweet. Cinnamon and vanilla are optional in this recipe, but we definitely recommend using them for the most delicious experience. If you want, you can also add a little nutmeg or sugar to it.
  • Salt: Don’t skip the salt! Just a pinch won’t affect the taste. The salt helps break down the eggs, incorporate them into the batter, and prevent egg pieces from forming in the finished product.
  • Butter: Like so many decadent foods, the best French toast is made with butter. If your French toast has a tendency to burn, try frying bread soaked in batter in a combination of butter and oil.

Ingredients:

  • ⅔ cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (Optional)
  • salt to taste
  • 6 thick slices bread
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, or more as needed

Directions:

  • Whisk and Dip. Combine eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon in a flat-bottomed shallow baking dish. Dip one or two bread slices at a time into the egg mixture and turn to make sure both sides of the bread are coated well.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet or skillet. Place the bread slices on a wok or tawa and cook on a medium flame till they turn golden brown in color from both the sides, for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Serve immediately or keep warm in oven until ready to serve, but no more than about 30 minutes.

Notes:

Recipe Tip! You’re just dipping your bread slices into the egg mixture. If you leave your bread in the mixture longer, it will absorb more liquid and take longer to cook.

Eggless French Toast

I make an egg-free French toast recipe that tastes just like my classic recipe for the egg-sensitive family member! I’ve made it two ways, both with great success.

  • Cornstarch – Replace the eggs called for in the recipe with ⅓ cup cornstarch.
  • Do not add eggs – I have also made it without eggs only. The exterior is still crispy, and it looks delicious.

Vegan French Toast

Use vegan butter, dairy-free milk and one of the egg-free recipe options above.
